In 1988, Dr. Olsen became one of the first in the nation to perform laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, a technique that would rapidly revolutionize the way abdominal surgery is performed in the U.S., and taught most of the early laparoscopic surgeons. Dr. Olsen has been performing bariatric surgery since 1999. Dr. Olsen currently serves as President of the Tennessee Chapter of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Dr. Olsen, what did you want to be when you were growing up (have you always wanted to be a doctor)?
"Since Kindergarten, Doctor was at the top of my list, initially a neurosurgeon, then a pathologist. It was not until the end of med school that I chose general surgery."
If you were not a surgeon, you would probably be a …?
"I almost did not apply for med school during college because of my interest to do graduate work in either electrical engineering or organic chemistry. So if I was not a doctor, it would be one of the above."
What are some challenges or life changes you’ve overcome?
"Probably the loss of my father and several good friends."
